Dr. Reid Pearlman is a veterinarian with a practice limited to orthopedic surgery exclusively. He works daily to treat conditions affecting the knee (cranial cruciate/ ACL tears) , the hip and all fractures affecting long bones and more on a case-by-case basis.
Dr. Reid Pearlman's interest / expertise are in the diagnosis and treatment of :
- Knee disease/ injury- Torn ACL/ CCL/ treatment of hindlimb lameness / limping in canine patients.
- Treatment of trauma- Fractured longbones, dislocated joints, polytrauma (multiple fractures), malunions, nonunions (fractures that fail to heal), infected/ open fractures.
Approximately 60% of his caseload is knee surgery/ torn ACL/ TPLO surgery.
Approximately 40% of his caseload is trauma- primarily canine patients who were hit by cars, suffered falls, etc.

Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) is a surgical procedure that addresses pain/ lameness resulting from a ruptured/ torn ACL in the knee/ stifle joint.
ACL/ CCL tear is the most common orthopedic condition that occurs in dogs and as a result TPLO is THE most common surgery Dr. Pearlman performs, by far. Patient weight range accommodated for this procedure ranges from 10 to 150+ pounds.

North Alabama Veterinary Orthopedics is at the cutting edge when it comes to providing GOLD STANDARD orthopedic care to canine and feline patients.
The most common scenario where we will utilize arthroscopy is in the diagnosis and treatment of ACL/ CCL disease / knee injuries in canine patients. This is done alongside a TPLO procedure generally.
During TPLO/ knee surgery it is imperative to inspect the knee joint to not only confirm the presence of a torn ACL/ CCL but also to inspect the other articular structures for damage and to surgically address these damaged structures.
There are 2 primary techniques utilized to inspect the canine knee joint:
Arthrotomy - Utilizing a direct approach. Incising the knee joint with a scalpel and manually opening the joint to assess the structures with the naked eye.
Arthroscopy - The introduction of a small (<3 mm diameter) camera into the joint along with a small instrument to not only diagnose disease/ injury, but to also treat the injury simultaneously. The image of the joint is not only illuminated , but also magnified and projected onto the screen.
Arthroscopy magnifies and illuminates the joint, allowing the surgeon to view the entire knee—including the hard-to-reach caudal horn of the medial meniscus. Because an open arthrotomy (directly opening joint with scalpel) provides a more restricted line of sight, subtle meniscal tears are more easily missed.
Studies comparing the two methods combined with TPLO show that dogs who undergo arthroscopy experience less short-term pain, reduced inflammation, and a quicker recovery than those who undergo traditional arthrotomy.
¹ Hoelzler, M. G., Millis, D. L., Francis, D. A., & Weigel, J. P. (2004). Results of arthroscopic versus open arthrotomy for surgical management of cranial cruciate ligament deficiency in dogs . Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 224(12), 1852-1857.
The advantages of arthroscopic knee joint inspection alongside a TPLO procedure summarized :
1. Smaller total incision length
2. Less short term pain/ inflammation and a quicker recovery
3. significantly greater sensitivity in the detection of additional ligament injuries in the knee joint.
The cost to have your dog's knee inspected via arthroscopy alongside a TPLO procedure is an additional 1200 dollars.

North Alabama Veterinary Orthopedics recognizes the specific challenges faced by our patients as well as the adverse circumstances they oftentimes find themselves in prior to presentation.
As a result, we utilize the most advanced methods available to treat pain and ensure beloved companions are comfortable and able to engage in normal activity quickly.
The pain medications we utilize act to "reset" pain receptors in the brain and ensure that patients will not only be comfortable after surgery, but will also be pain free before surgery.
For specific cases, we may elect to administer an epidural. An epidural acts to block pain transmission to the brain for an extended period of time. By blocking pain signals to the brain temporarily, we dramatically decrease the amount of anesthetic drug required during surgery and make procedures significantly safer and more comfortable.
Current literature supports managing pain appropriately in veterinary patients leading to superior healing and long term function. We agree.

NAVO believes strongly that good communication along with an individual treatment plan for every patient maximizes patient outcomes. All patients and pet parents will receive adequate consultation and may freely receive further consultation/ counseling regarding their pups surgery at any time. We understand that this is challenging for both pet parents and pets and we are on your team from the initial consult to the resolution.
NAVO guarantees that you will be satisfied with services provided. If for any reason you are unsatisfied or your pet seems uncomfortable, please contact us and we will make it right.

"Barkley, our 7 year old Goldendoodle, tore his ACL playing with our other 3 younger dogs. I was skeptical and scared of putting him through surgery. Before this happened, he had never been injured or had anesthesia except for one time when we had his teeth cleaned. We saw our vet and met with 3 orthopedic dog surgeons. Ultimately, we decided to have Dr. Reid Pearlman perform TPLO surgery. He was very thorough on explaining exactly what they would do, how they would do this and went to great detail on the very important aspects of the 8 week recovery period. He is at the 10 week mark and is doing great. The hardest part for Barkley and for us was the recovery afterwards. We have 3 other dogs and had to keep Barkley on daily sedation in order for him to heal properly. I highly recommend Dr. Pearlman!!! He did a wonderful job. He was open to any questions and concerns I had before, during and after Barkley’s surgery."

I cannot recommend Dr. Pearlman highly enough! He is an excellent surgeon who skillfully repaired my dog's ankle, and the results have been remarkable. From the first consultation, Dr. Pearlman demonstrated a caring and thoughtful approach, ensuring that I understood the procedure and what to expect.
Thanks to his expertise, my dog has regained mobility and is able to enjoy her life to the fullest again. The improvement in her quality of life is truly heartwarming, and I am so grateful for Dr. Pearlman's dedication and skill. If you're looking for a compassionate and talented veterinary surgeon, Dr. Pearlman is the one to trust!

Dr. Pearlman worked wonders on our foster dog Archie. We got him with a leg that was badly broken and had been recommended amputation. Dr. Pearlman however was able to perform surgery on it and Archie is now running around the backyard like any other dog! We appreciate the time and care he put into Archie and would highly recommend him for anything you need.
-Mint Shows
"Last summer our German shepherd jumped the fence and broke his leg. The prognosis was close to zero chance to keep his leg. Dr. Perlman took that chance and operated on him, and miraculously Bebe can now run again and fetch the ball, his favorite thing in the world
thank you Dr. Perlman!"

My parent's puppy aqua broke her leg jumping off of the couch. NAVO had nothing but confidence that she would be healthy as ever once they were done taking care of her. My parents were worried that she wouldn't be able to run the same or that she would have issues after treatment with her growing bones. We recently had to put my childhood dog down due to declining health as he was an old dog, so this puppy means so much to us and we worry so much more about her. Months later she is running faster than ever, playing with her brother, and she has no complications whatsoever. We will never be able to express our gratitude to the fullest extent because without NAVO she would not be the happy, healthy puppy she is today.

Dr. Pearlman is a highly rated surgeon not only by his clients but by his peers. Dr. Pearlman provided above and beyond service to our family. From prior to surgery to after care. He answered all our questions and it was himself that called us back in very timely fashion. He made himself available at all times to answer questions of after care. This is our forever surgeon. Our fur puppy had a complete acl tear. She had a plate with eight screws placed in her hind leg. He is fairly priced and honest. I can't say enough good things about him and his staff.
